How a Pharmacy First Plus consultation works
- Just pop in. You might want to phone or email ahead to confirm that our prescribing pharmacist is on site and able to see you.
- We will ask for your name, date of birth, and postcode to record the consultation on the NHS system. No referral or ID is required.
- The consultation takes place in our private consultation room. Our prescribing pharmacist will ask about your symptoms, medical history, and any medicines you are taking.
- Where appropriate, our prescribing pharmacist will prescribe and supply treatment on the NHS. If your condition needs a different service, we will help you take the next step.
Who can use this service
NHS Pharmacy First Plus is available to anyone registered with a GP practice in Scotland or living in Scotland. You do not need to be registered with a GP in the Inverness area — anyone living in Scotland is eligible.
Cost
There is no charge for an NHS Pharmacy First Plus consultation for those living in Scotland. Medicines supplied under the service on the NHS are free to you.

What is the difference between Pharmacy First and Pharmacy First Plus?
NHS Pharmacy First Scotland is the universal service every Scottish community pharmacy provides for common conditions — pharmacist-led advice and NHS-funded over-the-counter treatment. Pharmacy First Plus is an enhanced tier offered only where the pharmacist holds an independent prescribing qualification. Under Pharmacy First Plus, the pharmacist can assess and prescribe treatment for a wider range of conditions, such as urinary tract infections in men, and chest/throat infections, without the need for a GP appointment.
Who is eligible?
Anyone registered with a GP practice in Scotland, or who lives in Scotland. No referral is needed.
How much does it cost?
The consultation is free on the NHS. Any medicine supplied under the service on the NHS is free to you.
Do I need an appointment?

What happens if my condition is outside the Pharmacy First Plus service?
If your condition needs a GP, urgent care, or hospital assessment, we will inform you and help you with the next step — including contacting your GP practice or signposting you to NHS 24 on 111 for out-of-hours advice.
